1973: Good To See You Again, Alice Cooper'

This is a legendary 'Billion Dollar Babies' tour film directed by Joe Gannon and produced by Penthouse magazine. It was filmed in Dallas (April 28th) and Houston, Texas (April 29th) in 1973 and was shot on 16mm and then blown up to 35mm which explains why it is looks so dark. Originally set to be called 'The People Vs. Alice Cooper', and later 'Hard Hearted Alice' (according to news and interviews at the time) it became 'Good To See You Again, Alice Cooper' and it took decades for it to be officially released to the public, although a pirated release appeared from Germany in the mid-80s that was quickly stopped.

There are two versions of the film.
The original version features comedy skits by the band and others inbetween the songs. Most of these skits aren't really that successful although the opening sequence featuring 'The Lady Is A Tramp' is a classic. The plot, such as it is, sees a Germany film director (Fred Smoot) chasing the band around after they walk out of a film shoot. Also appearing in the skits are Jefferson Kewley as Baron Krelve and Pat McAllister as the groups manager.
The other version substituted all but the opening skit with various old movie clips and press conference footage. This version was used for the German pirated VHS but has never been officially released.

Footage exists of the filming of 'Good To See You Again' as part of the 'Home Movies' video bootleg that is in circulation. The film is reputably from Michael Bruce's personal collection and features the band off stage during 1973, as well as filming the 'Lasy Is A Tramp' skit. There's very little footage of Alice himself on these tapes and at over 2 hours with poor sound it becomes pretty boring very quickly.

The film opened in Endicott, NY (near Binghampton where the band had famously been banned from playing during the tour) and Cottage Grove Drive In, Oregon. It then received a limited theatrical release - mostly at midnight screenings - in the mid-'70s and continued to show up for several years.

When it was finally released on DVD on November 8th 2005 (January 30th 2006 in the UK) it featured the original cut of the film (including the comedy skits) in a new high-definition film transfer as well as a new Surround Sound mix created from the 16-track master tapes, plus a multitude of extras, including movie-length commentary by Alice himself. A blu-ray followed in 2010.

One minor controversy was sparked by the cover for the DVD, a well known photo of Alice on stage which had Michael Bruce airbrushed out for no good reason.

1975: 'The Nightmare'

'The Nightmare' was the visual equivalent to the 'Welcome To My Nightmare' album. It was aired on US Television (ABC 11:30 EST. 25th April '75) to great acclaim. The first film of it's kind 'The Nightmare' features a series of 'videos' to tell the story of the album, and features horror legend Vincent Price as 'The Curator', expanding on his original part on the album to become Alice's guide through his dreams. All the songs from the album are included plus a version of 'The Ballad Of Dwight Fry' which is actually the original 'Love It To Death' instrumental track with a new, probably live, vocal from Alice.

Nick V. Giordano won an Emmy for "outstanding achievement in video editing for a special" in 1976 for the show.

Around 1984 'The Nightmare' TV special was released on Warner Home Video, just when the home video market was starting to open up. Due to this it became eligible for a Grammy that year, and was indeed nominated for 'Best Video Album', but lost out to Duran Duran who were the current big thing. Alice attended the awards ceremony that year (February 28th 1984) and presented with disco diva Grace Jones.

Original video copies quickly disappeared and became extremely rare. The film wasn't officially available again until August 2017, when it was finally re-released on DVD, coupled with a slightly edited version of the 'Welcome To My Nightmare' Wembley concert film ('Department Of Youth' is cut from the live film, although it's still listed on the back cover and on the DVD menu!).

Musically 'The Nightmare' isn't an exact copy of the album. The song versions are diffeent and there are lyrical changes as well. According to Brian Nelson in 1997 some of the changes ('Only Women Bleed') were definitely due to worries over TV censors who were extremely strict in 1975. Some of the other lyrics were probably redone for "the fun of it" and maybe to actually make it a separate vehicle for the video or to tell the story of the nightmare differently (as in 'The Awakening').

1975: 'Welcome To My Nightmare'

The 'Welcome To My Nightmare' concert film, directed by David Winter amd Jorn Winther, that was professionally filmed at Wembley Empire Pool (now Wembley Arena) on 11th-12th September 1975 for release in cinemas and eventual home video release. It features the majority of the 'Welcome To My Nightmare' show although certain tracks aren't in the correct order.

This film has been re-released several times over the years with differing covers, but on April 20th 1999 Rhino Records released the best edition on a special DVD featuring an alternate commentary track recorded by Alice himself, a new never-before-seen interview, and a specially created Alice Cooper memorabilia and trivia game. The footage was also completely remastered from the original film elements and newly repackaged utilizing the original album art.

There was also a UK DVD release on Eagle Rock around the same time but this version DOES NOT have any of the features of the Rhino Version and is best avoided if possible.

In 2017 the film was released again paired with 'The Nightmare' TV Special, but this version of the live film is edited and also doeesn't have the commentary track.

1977: 'Alice Cooper And Friends'

This is a VHS tape, released in the mid-eighties, was originally a TV show. It features about 25 minutes of Alice Cooper as well as footage of The Tubes, Nazareth and Sha Na Na all recorded at the first night, 19th June 1977, of the 'Lace And Whiskey' ('King Of The Silver Screen') tour at the Anaheim Stadium, California. Alice was in pretty bad shape on this show and at the end of the tour he checked into hospital.

While this wasn't exactly Alice at his best (quite the opposite) this footage is almost the only surviving film (and only commercially available) of the 1977/78 show and as such worth seeing, if for nothing more then the infamous 'chickens with machine guns' during 'Lace And Whiskey' as poultry-kind finally gets revenge for The Toronto Incident!

Songs included on the tape are: 'School's Out', 'Is It My Body', 'Under My Wheels', 'Billion Dollar Babies', 'You And Me', 'Only Women Bleed', 'Lace And Whiskey', and 'I Love The Dead' but not all are complete and the total run time for Alice is under 25 minutes. While it's very likely the full show show was filmed, Brian Nelson (Alice's archivist/personal assistant) searched for additional footage without success, and it is assumed any additional film was destroyed/lost decades ago.

  2. Is It My Body
  3. Under My Wheels
  4. Billion Dollar Babies
  5. You And Me
  6. Only Women Bleed

1979: 'The Strange Case Of Alice Cooper'

'The Strange Case of Alice Cooper' is the live video of the 'From The Inside (Mad House Rock)' Tour filmed in San Diego April 9th 1979. It was unavailable for over 30 years until Shout Factory announced in 2012 that a DVD release would be forthcoming on May 22nd 2012.

At least two tracks were played at the show but not included in the video. The first was the unreleased song 'All Strapped Up'. This was omitted because it was performed using the 'magic screen' and didn't translate too well to film. The second was 'Dead Babies'. No reason for it's removal is known.

There are at least six variant releases of the VHS tape:

  1. US NTSC with Madhouse Show Car cover
  2. US Beta with Madhouse Show Car cover
  3. UK PAL with Snake cover
  4. UK BETA with Snake cover
  5. Australian PAL with Madhouse Show Car cover
  6. Swiss PAL with different cover

Rental and Retail copies don't appear to have had different covers. US versions with snake covers are always bootlegs using the UK sleeve.

'The Strange Case Of Alice Cooper' was finally released on NTSC DVD in the USA on May 22nd 2012 by Shout Factory! and was also available outside the US exclusively via AliceCooper.com. The DVD is region 0 so should play on any player that supports NTSC playback. The track listing is the same as the original VHS (additional footage from the show is said to no longer exist) but the DVD includes a commentary track with Alice. The new cover is the same photo seen on the 1979 tour programme.

1986: 'The Nightmare Returns'

'The Nightmare Returns' was professionally filmed at Detroit Joe Louis Arena in front of a sold out crowd on October 31st 1986 at the start of the 'Nightmare Returns' comback tour. It was originally filmed for a live MTV broadcast, and was eventually reissued on DVD in 2006 with the addition of promotional videos for 'Teenage Frankenstein' and 'Freedom'.

The original US and UK VHS releases had different covers, The UK one being the green version seen to the left. The US version was used for the DVD release.

in 2012 the soundtrack was released as a digital only release by Universal-Island Records Ltd. Physical CD versions of the soundtrack appear to be pirated copies.

1989: 'Video Trash'

A compilation VHS tape comprising three promotional videos from the 'Trash' album with linking footage shot in Birmingham, England on the day of the filming of "Trashes The World" video. The film has not ben released on DVD but there is a Japanese laser disc.

The video included 'Poison', 'House of Fire', and 'Bed of Nails' and was about 20 minutes long. The fourth video for 'Only My Heart Talkin'' was not included but shot at the same time.

The original VHS has been deleted for decades.

1990: 'Alice Cooper Trashes The World'

'Alice Cooper Trashes The World' was professionally filmed at Birmingham NEC in England on 13th-14th December 1989. In fact, the majority of the video is from the first night (13th) with additional shots showing the audience from the back of the stage shot on the second night as the venue was much fuller the second night (it being the first show announced). The film features more or less the whole show (no songs are cut).

In March 2004 Sony released 'Trashes The World' on DVD for the first time. This is basically a cheap and cheerful transfer of the original video tape with only a song selection menu to add anything new. The US and UK versions have very slightly different covers.

1990: 'Prime Cuts - The Alice Cooper Story'

'Prime Cuts' is the first official film documentary which traces the history of Alice Cooper up to the 'Hey Stoopid' album. It features archive footage and interviews.

There are two versions of this video. The first US version features a few minutes extra footage of Alice talking about Kane Roberts and Kip Winger.

The original single disc Region 1 version (NTSC) of Prime Cuts, released by Image Entertainment has some addition footage of the Kane Roberts (Nightmare Returns) band not on later versions. It also has the correct aspect ratio of 1.33:1 along with superior picture quality to disc 1 on the more recent version which has been cropped to 1.85:1 thus losing much screen information top and bottom. Even the graphics on the opening title have been altered to accomodate the widescreen format.(Mother Mercury, message board, Aug 2005)

There are two different covers to the European version. The original cover featured a shot of Alice on-stage with white hat and coat. This was an error by the European manufacturers. The correct, second, cover is the shot of Alice with the flower on his head.

There is a VCD version (on two discs)(CMM DD 111) and a single DVD version was released on 1st June 1998.

On September 24th 2001 the film was re-released as 'Prime Cuts - The Alice Cooper Story' as a double DVD in a card gatefold cover. The first disc featured the original 'Prime Cuts' home video, with a second disc containing 80 minutes of supplementary material. The UK version came in a special gatefold and textured sleeve based on the `Billion Dollar Babies` snake skin theme.
NOTE: This version has the film badly cropped to 16x9 from the original 4:3, and the video quality is noticiable lower then the original release.

Features include:

  • Interviews with original Alice Cooper band-members Neal Smith, Michael Bruce, and Dennis Dunaway.
  • 27 minutes worth of dress-rehearsal footage from the 1987 'Raise Your Fist And Yell' tour.
  • Never-before-seen VH-1 'Behind The Music' interview footage

  • Brand new and exclusive interview with Alice filmed in L.A. in March 2001
  • Song selection via the Alice Cooper Virtual Jukebox
  • Extras accessible via interactive 'Cooper game'
  • Fully animated opening sequence and menu

To skip the interactive game, and see all the additional footage without the hassle of playing the game, use the DVD player remote control and manually input Title 2 chapter 1 (from info that was on AC.com).

2002: 'DVD-EP'

In 2002, Classic Pictures released a DVD-EP featuring Alice's performances from German show 'Beat Club' in the early 70s. It features 'Under My Wheels', 'I'm Eighteen' and 'Public Animal #9' in surround sound, plus a ton of clips advertising other releases. There are two versions of each track. A 'clean' version, and a version with pop-up information about the band.

  1. Under My Wheels
  2. I'm Eighteen
  3. Public Animal #9

2003: 'The Ultimate Clips Collection'

While the title of this short video-EP is a little misleading (it only includes tracks from three albums - 'Trash', 'Hey Stoopid' and 'The Last Temptation') it's a good way to get most of the promotional videos for the Epic era singles on DVD, although strangely 'House Of Fire' is missing. There's no extras or fancy menus, it's just a cheap and cheerful compilation of clips.

2014: 'Super Duper Alice Cooper'

'Super Duper Alice Cooper' was originally called 'Vincent Goes To Hell: An Alice Cooper Doc Opera' and is a documentary film by filmmaker Sam Dunn and Banger Films who are well known for making award winning films on various rock subjects including Iron Maiden ('Flight 666') and Rush ('Beyond The Lighted Stage'). The film was announced in December 2011 and had its premiere in April 2014 at the Tribica Film Festival in New York.

"Super Duper Alice Cooper is the twisted tale of a teenage Dr Jekyll whose rock n roll Mr Hyde almost kills him. It is the story of Vincent Furnier, preacher’s son, who struck fear into the hearts of parents as Alice Cooper, the ultimate rock star of the bizarre. From the advent of Alice as front man for a group of Phoenix freaks in the 60s to the hazy decadence of celebrity in the 70s to his triumphant comeback as 80s glam metal godfather, we will watch as Alice and Vincent battle for each others’ souls. The film is the first ever ‘doc opera’ – a dizzying blend of documentary archive footage, animation and rock opera that will cement forever the legend of Alice Cooper."

Directed by Reginald Harkema, Sam Dunn and Scot McFadyen the film is 97 minutes long and features a wealth of live footage and interviews with Alice, Shep, Dennis Dunaway, Neal Smith, Sheryl Cooper, Ella Cooper, Bob Ezrin and loads more. Controversially there is NO mention of Michael Bruce in the movie!

In March 2014 a variety of promotional retail bundles were announced which included a 40 page book, T-Shirt, poster, frisbee and panties with the DVD and Blu-Ray scheduled to be released on May 26th. There is also a deluxe edition which includes film of a 1972 Toronto show and the 2009 Montreaux show on audio CD. Also announced was a facebook competition to ask Alice questions which would be put into a bonus film to be shown with the main movie in theatres and, presumably, be added as an extra to the discs when released. A 'selected Theatre run' began in the UK and Europe on April 22nd followed by the US and Canada on April 28th. The European showings included an introduction from Alice and the short 10 question Facebook interview at the end of the movie. The US showings had a live simulcast from the Canadian Hot Docs Documentary Festival in Toronto.

The deluxe set included the following:
